Welcome!

I’m HumanMusician, a musician, comedian, and statistician currently based in Southern California (but hoping to be based someday in the Blue Ridge Mountains or in outer space). My commitment is to write my songs and play my instruments without the use of AI. If you want music from an actual human, you are in the right place.

I am also an advocate for folk music, music written about people’s everyday lives and performed in everyday circumstances. I think that because of social media and algorithms, too often everything we see is overly curated, engineered to entertain. Entertainment does not equal connection. We should tell our own stories in our own voices.

I know that AI is useful for many things and has potential to help humans in meaningful ways. I also know that art is about expression: human expression of ideas, feelings, and events. Art helps us to make sense of what is happening. Think about a time when you’ve heard a song that captured what you couldn’t quite put into words yourself. Just hearing that song can help you feel better and gain perspective, and that can be even truer for the person who wrote the song.

The rise of AI is coinciding with lots of other things that make it harder for us to hear and understand each other. Perhaps more than ever, people need tools to express themselves constructively and make sense of the world. Be a human. Be a musician.
